Police beat: Local teen arrested after police cruisers rammed

GUELPH – A teenaged girl from Wellington County faces several charges after fleeing from police and ramming two cruisers.

Just before 10pm on Jan. 9, Guelph Police were informed by Waterloo Regional Police about a vehicle ramming two of their cruisers when they attempted to stop it.

Guelph officers later located the vehicle in a parking lot on Woodlawn Road East.

“As they approached, the driver attempted to flee and collided with a fence,” Guelph Police stated in a Jan. 12 press release.

“An officer used their cruiser to pin the vehicle in place. No injuries were reported by the driver or her three passengers.”

Police say the woman, who “was displaying signs of impairment,” was arrested and transported to a Guelph police station.

A 17-year-old Guelph/Eramosa girl was charged with impaired driving, flight from police, three counts of dangerous driving and three counts of failing to stop after a collision.

Her licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle impounded for seven days.

She is to appear in court on Jan. 28.

Fergus theft

FERGUS – Police are asking for help to identify two suspects in a recent theft.

On Jan. 11, Wellington County OPP responded to “a business” on St. David Street North in Fergus for a theft that occurred the previous day.

“Two unknown suspects entered the business, concealed approximately $3,600 worth of product and left the store without paying,” police stated.

“Members of the Wellington County OPP are continuing to investigate this incident and are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the suspects involved.”

Despite the plea for tips, police refused to disclose the location of the theft.

Vehicle stolen

WELLINGTON NORTH – A local teenager has been charged after a car was stolen here last week.

Wellington County OPP officials say police responded to the theft, at a Mount Forest residence, on Jan. 9 at about 9:30am.

A 17-year-old from Mount Forest was charged with theft of a vehicle and driving without a licence.

The accused is to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

Careless driving

ELORA – A Grimsby driver was charged, but not with drinking and driving, after going through a RIDE program here last weekend.

On Jan. 10 at about 2:15pm, Wellington County OPP officers were conducting a RIDE check on Carlton Place in Elora.

“During the check, officers observed a driver operating a vehicle in which several passengers were not wearing seat belts, including two passengers under the age of 16,” police stated in a press release.

A 40-year-old from Grimsby was charged with careless driving and two counts of driving with a passenger under 16 not wearing a seat belt.

Police are reminding drivers they must wear a seat belt and also ensure:

– every person in the vehicle has their own working seatbelt;

– passengers under the age of 16 wear their seatbelts properly; and

– children are secured in an appropriate car seat or booster seat.

Partner violence

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Local police continue to lay intimate partner violence charges across the county.

Those arrested include a 37-year-old from Elora, who was charged with intimidation and two counts of uttering threats (to cause death or bodily harm) in relation to an incident in Fergus on Jan. 6.

The accused individual is  to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

Commercial vehicle charges

CENTRE WELLINGTON – A local business and driver have been charged following a traffic stop here last week.

Wellington County OPP officials say officers were monitoring traffic on Wellington Road 26 in Centre Wellington on Jan. 9 at about  12:45pm when they stopped a commercial vehicle.

Following an inspection, a Fergus business was charged with:

– permitting operation of unsafe vehicles;

– failing to display inspection sticker or proof;

– operating a commercial vehicle without a valid certificate;

– failing to ensure completion of a daily inspection log and to ensure performance standards are met; and

– load not secured as prescribed.

A 46-year-old from Elora faces six charges, including  driving an unsafe vehicle, driving with an improper licence and improper tires.

The accused are to appear  in Guelph court at a later date.

Prohibited driver

GUELPH – A Guelph driver was charged following a traffic stop here last week.

Wellington County OPP officials say an officer was conducting proactive traffic enforcement on Fife Road in Guelph on Jan. 7 at 2:15am.

The cruiser’s automatic license plate recognition system “registered a ‘hit’ on a potential suspended driver,” police stated.

A 43-year-old Guelph man was charged with driving while prohibited. He is to appear in Guelph court on Feb. 13.
