Summer heat is here and public health reminds everyone to plan.

Everyone is at risk from heat, so it’s good to have a summer safety plan to prevent heat illness.

This is particularly important for those most vulnerable, including older adults, infants and children, and those with chronic illnesses. Consequently, the public is advised to monitor weather forecasts and be prepared with a plan for hot and humid days.

Summertime heat precautions should include drinking plenty of cool liquids before feeling thirsty; planning outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day; and making a habit of checking on elderly family, friends and neighbours on hot and humid days.

It’s good to plan regular breaks from the heat by spending a few hours in a cool place. It could be a tree-shaded area, or an air-conditioned spot such as a shopping mall, grocery store or public library.
