Owner charged after dog attack leaves one person, dog injured

FERGUS – A local dog owner has been charged after their pet attacked a person and dog over the weekend.

Wellington County OPP officers responded to the incident, in a wooden area on Gauley Drive in Fergus, on Oct. 18 at about 7pm.

Police say the victim and their dog were attacked by an unleashed dog while walking in the area.

“The victim attended local hospital for assessment,” stated an Oct. 20 OPP press release.

“Both the owner and dog sustained minor injuries.”

A 34-year-old Fergus resident was charged with failing to restrain a dog by leash and muzzle and two counts of failing to prevent a dog from biting.

The accused is scheduled to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

“Please ensure that you are able to maintain control of your dog at all times in order to prevent any potential injuries to others or to the dog itself,” police stated.

They noted owners could be liable if their dog bites/attacks another person or animal.
