Over 70 charges in Hwy. 6 blitz

Wellington County OPP officials say focused patrols on Highway 6 throughout Centre Wellington were “successful.”

The two-week blitz, from Feb. 7 to 21, focused efforts on Highway 6 from Wellington Road 17 in the north end of the township, to Wellington Road 51, just south of the township’s border in Guelph-Eramosa Township.

Police say there were no collisions reported in that time, though three vehicles entered the ditch during poor road and weather conditions.

Overall the OPP laid 73 charges during the blitz, including: 65 for speeding, three for driving with a hand held device, two for driving while suspended, two for having no insurance, and a single charge for not wearing a seatbelt.

“By focusing our patrols in higher-collision locations, we can be more effective in reducing those crashes making it safer for everyone,” said Wellington County OPP Inspector Scott Lawson.

Police reminded motorists to slow down and drive according to the road and weather conditions, and also not to call 911 or the OPP for road reports (instead visit www.mto.on.ca).
