Wellington County OPP officials have released the results of a recent “focused patrol” on Wellington Road 124 across the county.

This initiative ran from Feb. 29 to March 14 and concentrated on reducing the number of preventable motor vehicle collisions. Police say detailed analysis found many of the collisions on this stretch were a result of drivers speeding, driving distracted and following too close for the road and weather conditions.

Officers issued provincial offence notices for the following infractions: 17 for speeding, 13 for failing to stop at a stop sign, two for failing to yield to an amber light and one each for not having a front licence plate and for failing to surrender an insurance card. Two court summons were issued for driving while suspended and one each for using an unauthorized plate and having no insurance.

During the two-week blitz OPP officers also investigated five collisions, resulting in two people getting injured and  four Highway Traffic Act charges being laid.

“With an increased police presence patrolling this stretch of busy roadway, our goal is to change poor driver behavior,” said Wellington County OPP Inspector Scott Lawson.

“Investigating five collisions; two resulting in injury is not what we were hoping to see, but we will continue to focus on those high-collision locations across the county where we can make the biggest difference.”

Police are reminding motorists to slow down and drive according to road and weather conditions, and to check the Ministry of Transportation website prior to leaving for road conditions (at www.mto.on.ca/english/travellers).
