OPP: Be cautious around buses

In addition to watching out for children and driving slowly, police are also reminding drivers to be mindful of the rules regarding school buses.

Every driver shall stop at least 20 metres before reaching the bus and not proceed until the bus moves or its overhead lights have stopped flashing.

Penalties for not obeying the rules include $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points for the first offence; and $1,000 to $4,000 or imprisonment or both for  subsequent offences.

If the driver can’t be identified, the owner of the vehicle may be charged.
