An Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) hearing is being held next week in Centre Wellington after the township refused a zoning amendment to allow a commercial dog breeding operation on a 3/4-acre lot.

The decision was appealed and a hearing is being held on Oct. 12 at 10:30am in the township council chamber in Elora.

The purpose of the hearing is to hear an appeal “to permit a commercial kennel on an undersized lot”  at 7629 Fourth Line in former Nichol township.

The zone change was refused by the township at a council meeting in July 2015.

At the time of council’s original decision, residents voiced concern that the proposed kennel raises health and safety questions with the operation being on such a small property - even though the land is in a rural area.

Without the zoning amendment, the property does not meet the minimum size or setbacks as required by the township for a commercial operation.
