Physicians and staff from both Groves Memorial Community Hospital (GMHC) and North Wellington Health Care (NWHC) participated together in an obstetrical training program aimed at enhancing a culture of safety in every aspect of their working environment.
The training program, referred to as MORE OB is a comprehensive, patient safety, professional development, and performance improvement program for caregivers and administrators in hospital obstetrical units.
The program runs continuously throughout the year and is based on: patient safety as the priority, effective communication, teamwork, decreased hierarchy in emergencies, practice for emergencies, and reflective learning.
On April 13, physicians and staff participated in the one-day hands on training group-based exercises
“We are in the sixth year of the MORE OB training program and we have seen over the years an enhancement in our practice and philosophy of care – a key focus always being that patient safety is everyone’s responsibility, all of the time.” said Stephanie Pearsall, Vice-President Patient Services and Chief Nursing Executive, GMCH and NWHC.
“Traditionally, Obstetrical units are composed of care providers who have been educated within their own professional programs.” states Dr. Mark Sugamori and MORE OB Core Co-Chair.
“By learning together through the MORE OB Program, care providers develop a shared knowledge base and a common language that fosters clear communication and efficient management of obstetrical risks. The obstetrical teams become more cohesive and create a safe, family centered model of practice.”
Wellington Health Care Alliance consists of two corporations, North Wellington Health Care and Groves Memorial Community Hospital.
The alliance has three hospitals sites serving Centre and North Wellington as cornerstones of health care delivery.
All three hospitals combined provide care for close to 500 births per year.
