LISTOWEL – About 200 students and staff from Norwell District Secondary School (NDSS) came together for Relay for Life, a fundraiser in support of the Canadian Cancer Society, on May 29.

The event, returning to NDSS after a hiatus of several years, was hosted by Between the Lines Sports Campus in Listowel and ran from noon until midnight.

Throughout the day and evening, participants took part in a wide variety of activities, including dodgeball, Drom, tug-of-war, pickleball, soccer, volleyball, badminton, zumba, face painting, a photo booth, live music and many others.

Organizers say the atmosphere was filled with energy, teamwork and a shared commitment to making a difference in the fight against cancer.

During the opening ceremonies, participants were welcomed with a message of unity and hope. Students and staff were reminded that by working together, change can be made in the future of cancer.

Immediately following the opening ceremonies, Norwell’s cancer survivors were introduced and recognized. They officially kicked off the event by walking the first lap of the relay, with participants following behind as the survivors led the way.

“One of the most meaningful moments of the evening was the luminary ceremony,” states a media release.

“This special time allowed participants to remember and reflect on loved ones lost to cancer. As students and staff walked the track, they read the heartfelt messages written on the luminary bags, creating a powerful atmosphere of remembrance and support.”

Even after a day of activities, participants continued to bring enthusiasm and energy to the event, officials say. Students participated in hacky sack games, music provided by DJ Cody and a movie later in the evening.

Throughout the day, participants also had the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for the many donated prizes provided by local businesses and community supporters.

As midnight approached, participants gathered for one final lap around the track. They celebrated not only a successful event, but also the incredible impact they made together. Having already surpassed the original fundraising goal of $25,000, hopes were high that Norwell would reach the $50,000 mark.

When all the pledges and donations were counted, Norwell had raised an astounding $51,486 for the Canadian Cancer Society, officials say.

Staff advisor Betty Douglas reflected on the success of the event and the support shown by the Norwell community.

“We are grateful to live in a community that is so supportive and lucky to work with students who understand the importance of giving back and helping others,” said Douglas.

“The dedication, compassion and enthusiasm shown by our students throughout Relay for Life was  inspiring. This achievement belongs to everyone who donated, participated, volunteered and supported our efforts.”
