Minto council has approved a site and servicing plan that will pave the way for a new pharmacy building in Palmerston.
Council gave the go ahead for the new construction at its meeting on Sept. 20.
Chief administrative officer Bill White presented the recommendation for construction of a Prescription Shoppe outlet at 261 Main St.
The building will be located between Palmerston Funeral Chapel and Kempston and Worth Realty Limited and will consist of a 5,000 square foot structure.
The pharmacy will be housed on the main floor with the upper floor for storage and mechanical items.
“We’ve reviewed the plan and this is exactly what we want happening in our downtown,” White told council.
According to White it is expected the new pharmacy could be in place by the end of the year.
Volunteer appreciation
Minto council will host an appreciation barbecue for volunteers in the community.
White told council at its Sept. 20 meeting the plan is to have a barbecue and reception at the municipal office. In case of rain, White said, the event will be held indoors.
Council agreed to host the event on Oct. 18 around 6pm prior to the regularly scheduled council meeting with community volunteers invited to attend.
Legal matters
Council is looking at obtaining a new law firm for the town’s general legal work.
Minto currently uses lawyer Gil Deverell of Deverell, Lemaich, Harriston for general legal work.
White told council the town has been informed by Deverell that his firm is withdrawing its services.
“Mr. Deverell has agreed to continue working on current files that he has been involved with and transition over to new counsel in the coming weeks,” White told council.
Minto also receives services from Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti, of Toronto, for cases involving labour law, and Ken Strong of Strong, McDougall Oudekerk for general litigation.
The chief administrative officer has advised the other firms the town will be looking at proposal requests for services now conducted by Deverell.
“Depending on the response received the town may be able to secure all legal services from one firm,” White said.
The town’s legal services budget has fluctuated over the years from $22,500 to $33,500. For 2011 council has budgeted $22,500.
Legal costs for 2012 will be based on the contract from the successful firm.
