New Mapleton council sworn in

The individuals who will lead the township over the next four years were officially sworn in during a ceremony last week at the municipal building east of Drayton.

New Mayor Bruce Whale thanked the returning members of the previous council for their support and also welcomed new councillors Neil Driscoll and Andy Knetsch.

“I’m sure it’s going to be an interesting time,” Whale said of the 2011 to 2014 term, adding he looks forward to serving the municipality over the next four years. “I don’t think there’s a challenge out there that collectively we can’t come up with a solution for.”

Councillor Jim Curry said it is “an honour” to serve the community after 17 years on council in Drayton and Mapleton.

Curry thanked another long-time councillor, former mayor John Green, from whom Curry said he learned a lot “in many respects.” He noted the new council has a lot on its plate, but he looks forward to serving the community.

Councillor Mike Downey thanked everyone for attending the inaugural meeting and welcomed new councillors as well as returning members Curry and Whale.

Driscoll said he looks forward to serving on council and thanked the  community for the support in the election, calling it “an honour” to receive so many votes. Driscoll also thanked his family for their support and said he looks forward to bringing new ideas to the table.

Knetsch  expressed his thanks to voters and commented on the professionalism of Mapleton staff, whose members he complimented for their leadership and teamwork.
