A new program is set to offer a helping hand to local families starting in October.
The Wellington-Guelph Drug Strategy Committee and its partners announce the launch of new Strengthening Families for the Future (SFF) and Strengthening Families for Parents and Youth (SFPY) programs in Guelph and Wellington County.
Both involve entire families.SFF is designed for families with children between the ages of 7 and 11, and SFPY is geared to families with children 12 to 16.
Research has shown that these programs;
– increase children and youth resilience and life skills;
– increase positive and effective parenting; and
– increase family communication.
Those have demonstrated to increase family stability and support, and to reduce the risk of substance use problems, depression, violence, delinquency and school failure.
A new session of SFF will begin in Guelph at the First Baptist Church, starting on Oct. 18. The program runs once a week for 14 weeks, and will take place on Tuesdays from 4:30pm to 7:30pm.
SFPY also starts on Oct. 18, in Arthur at the Youth Options School. The program runs once a week for nine weeks, and will take run Tuesdays from 5:30 to 8pm. Both programs begin with a free meal, followed by educational and fun activities for parents and their children and youth. Free child care is provided on-site, and assistance with transportation can also be arranged. There is no cost to attend and all families are welcome. Space is limited.
