New council to look at dangerous intersections

Members of the outgoing Puslinch council have recommended that staff devise a list of the township’s “most dangerous” intersections and report to the new council with recommendations to address the problems.

On Nov. 3 council considered a letter from resident Allessa Fisher, who was concerned following a fatal accident last month at the corner of Victoria and Leslie Roads, where she has lived for 10 years.

“The speed [at] which people travel along Leslie Road is well over 100km/hr,” wrote Fisher, who added other residents are also very concerned.

“I am not sure if it would help, but has the township ever considered putting a four-way stop there?”

Mayor Brad Whitcombe said he is hesitant to make such changes in reaction to certain events and without some scientific data to back the move.

Public Works Superintendent Jim Howlett seemed to agree. He explained township staff has, in the past, trimmed trees and bushes in the area to improve sightlines – and there may be more the township can do now in that regard.

“I’m just leery of setting a precedent,” Howlett said.

But councillor Susan Fielding said she doubts there would be similar requests because she can’t think of an intersection that is worse then Victoria and Leslie.

Whitcombe wondered if a four-way stop actually improves safety, but said it may double the chances of someone stopping. Fielding said the latter is likely to occur.

Councillor Dick Visser suggested Howlett come up with a list of the “most dangerous intersections” in the township and report back to the new council.  The rest of the current council agreed.
