New Clifford Covered Bridge cancellation stamp revealed

Postmaster Ann Lange and local stamp enthusiast Jim Measures revealed the new Clifford Covered Bridge cancellation stamp on Jan. 19 at the Clifford Post Office.

The stamp reads, “Canada Post Clifford, On Postes Canada.”

The stamp design shows a tree, the covered bridge in Rotary Park, and three fish swimming in ripples of water.

In honour of the 150th Community Anniversary and 2017 Clifford Homecoming, Measures and Lange created a cancellation stamp for the year of celebration.

On Sept. 9, 2016 Lange, along with co-workers and representatives from the homecoming committee, launched the cancellation stamp depicting Clifford’s Homecoming motto “Come Celebrate.”

Knowing the stamp would only last for the celebration year, Measures and Lange decided to create a stamp to celebrate Clifford after the festivities were over.

This reveal coincides with the issue date of Jan.  15 for the new stamps for the “Year of the Dog.”

One stamp depicts an “intricate dog illustration on a beautiful illuminated lantern.”

The other dog is described as “a huggable hound howling in celebration of the year in the Chinese lunar calendar.”

Another stamp series “From Far and Wide” also had the issue date of Jan. 15.

“These stunning stamps will take you on a journey to some of the most breathtaking locations in Canada,” states Canada Post.

They feature the jelly bean houses of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Hopewell Rocks in New Brunswick, MacMillan Provincial Park in British Columbia, Prince Edward Island National Park and Pisew Falls Provincial Park in Manitoba.

Barb Harris was the first customer to have an envelope officially stamped with the new cancellation stamp. She was sending birthday greetings to Max Held in honour of his 90th birthday.

Held moved to Clifford in the 1970s with his wife Helene and family and built a hardware business.

He attended the homecoming festivities and now will be celebrating his own special day.
