MYAC recommends creation of “˜youth spaces”™ around Minto

Creation of indoor and outdoor youth spaces in Clifford, Harriston and Palmerston  was  recommended by the Minto Youth Action Council (MYAC) during a recent presentation to Minto council.

The MYAC group presented an update on their activities to council on Nov. 21.

Group members noted MYAC has worked with Minto council members on trail projects, helped plan a North Wellington Youth Connection event, installed youth information boards in local arenas and initiated a $250 MYAC bursary for graduating Norwell District Secondary School students.

The group is also working with the Minto Chamber of Commerce to create a new award to recognize a local youth who demonstrates strong volunteerism.

MYAC is also in the process of setting up study spaces in each town to operate during exam seasons with snacks and “stress buster” activities.

The group is planning events such as a foam walk/run in conjunction with the Minto Fire 91Run, a road hockey tournament, dances (including one hosted jointly with Mapleton Youth Action Council) and a second annual Amazing Race scavenger hunt.

The group asked council to consider designating indoor and outdoors spaces to provide youths aged 13 to 19 with places to socialize in the community. Outdoor spaces could include a sitting area as well as spots to play Sports.

“A basketball court, volleyball court and outdoor ping pong would be great additions in the towns for youth to take part in,” the group notes in their report.

Councillor Jean Anderson suggested a youth space in Harriston in the area of the arena, possibly the pavilion on the property, might work well.

“And it will be recognized as a spot so people won’t be saying, ‘Oh there’s always kids … hanging around there,’” she added.

Council accepted the  report including the recommendations.

“We look forward to working with you in the future and if we slow down on any of those items you want, keep pushing,” said deputy mayor Ron Faulkner.
