Museum, society to unveil new online version of essays, journals

The Wellington County Museum and Archives and the Wellington County Historical Society are about to launch the Wellington County Historical Society Essays and Journals Digitization Project.

The Wellington County Historical Society has held an annual essay contest since 1943.

It has also published since 1987 an annual journal highlighting historical themes and topics documenting the history of Wellington County.

The society unveiled Volume 25 of the Journal at its annual general meeting this spring. These essays and journals are an informative resource for local history that has in the past been overlooked by researchers, historians and genealogists.

Access to this important research tool has been limited to viewing the original essays and journals – until now.

The project involved scanning, transcribing and making these handwritten and typed pages available online in the very near future at www.wellington.ca/museum.

This new online database allows for keyword searching as well as access to the original documents.

Partial funding for this project was received from Museums and Technology Fund of the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport.

The Wellington County Museum and Archives and the Wellington County Historical Society are inviting residents to join them for the public demonstration and launch of this exciting digitization project.

This event is on Oct. 11 at 11am in the Nicholas Keith Room at the Wellington County Museum and Archives on Wellington Road 18 between Fergus and Elora.

A light luncheon will be provided following the demonstration.

Those planning to attend should contact Ron Hattle of the Wellington County Historical Society at 519-546-3450 or ronhattle@gmail.com.
