Minto mayor George Bridge shares thoughts in inaugural address

New Mayor George Bridge believes in Minto and that “the possibilities are endless.”

His comments were part of the town’s inaugural session on Dec. 1 as councillors for the 2010-2014 term were sworn in.

“I would like to offer my special thanks to our piper this evening, Alex Watson; our vocalist, Kim Moroz’ Reverend Mel Sauer; and our acting-clerk Jane Steller and town staff for organizing tonight’s event

“I want to take this time, in front of the whole community, to pay tribute to my friends and supporters who have walked at my side on the campaign trail, in good weather and bad weather. Your friendships, insights and caring ways have carried me to this day and to this honour.”

“On a personal note, I would take this opportunity to thank my family. First, to my life-time partner, Susan, your support has been greatly appreciated. You are always there when I need you. To my children and their spouses, Carrie and Colin, Amy and Grant, and Aaron – thanks for standing behind me and for supporting me in my decision to run for mayor. To my mother Florence – like mothers everywhere, Mom taught her children to love and care for others. I have never forgotten.

He also remembered his father, who was also a prominent local politician. “My father Milton was with me in spirit from the beginning. His philosophy was always to give back to the community that you live in.

“It is exciting for me to be here tonight addressing this inaugural meeting as Mayor. It’s a privilege to lead this council and our community for the next four years. I will honour the trust you have placed in me and will always hold sacred your confidence.”

“Perhaps you’ve heard the joke about the little boy who asks his Mom ‘Do all fairy tales begin with – once upon a time?’ His mother replies ‘No Darling. There’s another series of fairy tales that begin with – If elected, I promise … Well, this promise is not a  fairy tale. I will work with council and town staff to make our municipal government more open, more transparent, more accessible and more inclusive. I will try to ensure that your interaction with the Minto team is enjoyable, productive, and yes sometimes maybe even fun.”

Bridge also cited council’s coming responsibilities.

“Let’s not forget one thing. Minto voters sent a strong message that they expect us – council, staff and mayor to do a better job. A better job of working together to move the business of this town forward in a positive and productive atmosphere. I believe we have a strong team with a diversity of skills in this council. I promise to be fair and supportive and I believe the public expects the same.”

He said, “During the campaign, I stressed a hands on approach. Let me clarify this. You’ll find that I will be interested in the day-to-day operation of our town, but I will not micromanage the town’s administration or council members. However, we must be kept fully informed so that little problems don’t become big ones.”

He said, “I will have an office here, in the town municipal building. My door is open, please feel free to stop me on the street, call me, or email me. I’m here to listen.”

He said some of the challenges for the coming year will include:

– implementation of a new town structure;

– hiring of a Chief Administrative Officer and Clerk; and

– review the current five year strategic plan and set up a committee to create the next five year plan.

“There will be many other important challenges facing council and I am certain that we can also be creative in addressing them with your help.

“Together we can turn positive visions of Minto into reality.
