Minto, Mapleton declare state of emergency, open evacuation centres

In the wake of massive flooding in the region, Mapleton and Minto have declared a state of emergency and opened evacuation centres.

Mapleton Mayor Neil Driscoll declared the emergency at 11:15am on June 23 and announced the PMD Arena in Drayton has been set up as the township’s evacuation centre.

Emergency crews were warning residents and business owners in various areas of Drayton that flooding was still imminent in some areas.

Minto Mayor George Bridge declared a state of emergency at 10:04am on June 23.

The Palmerston Community Centre has been established as the Minto evacuation centre.

Harriston trailer park residents were evacuated early on Friday morning and Minto Fire was also evacuating King Street residents.

The Maitland River breached the Young Street Bridge in Harriston and flooded areas of King Street, George Street and the trailer park.

The river, which was also close to reaching the bottom of the Arthur Street bridge, was still rising fast at noon on Friday.
