Minto Mayor George Bridge said it is great to see the launch of a market here, along with the one in Harriston.
“I think its a great boon to the economy to have our local produce displayed and give local people an opportunity to sell their products,” Bridge said.
The market opening was slated as one of a number of events in Palmerston that day, including the Splash Pad Bash and a barbecue hosted by Perth-Wellington MPP John Wilkinson.
But perhaps for some of the younger folks, one of the highlights would have been the chance to ride a mini-version of Palmerston’s Old 81.
The locomotive, powered by a garden tractor, acts as a tow-vehicle for trailers with benches, to transport people through town.
Wayne Martin said that four years ago, a similar vehicle was rented.
But when organizers considered the cost of rental, “We decided to build our own.”
“With the support of council and economic development, the community and the Lions Club, they were able to find someone in Clifford who built it for us.”
Organizers bought a tractor and two trailers.
“Over that winter, he put this all together for us,” Martin said. “The intention is to give families rides through the park, parades or advertise where ever we need to.”
Minto Business and Economic Manager Belinda Wick-Graham said, “With the railway heritage here in Palmerston, it’s a nice addition to the park.”
She added it provides some activity for children and families. “It’s an exciting thing and generates talk on the street with the train and everything associated with it.”
She added that Martin was a great driver in getting the project completed, along with other community members.
“Without them, it would not have been possible,” Wick-Graham said.
