Minto council amends zoning to allow duplex on Robertson Street in Harriston

Council here has approved the creation of a duplex on Robertson Street, after ensuring concerns of neighboring residents were addressed.

The proposal, which originally included the possibility a fourplex could be built on the property at 46 Robertson in the future, met with stiff opposition from neighbouring residents at a public meeting on Jan. 19.

Through letters and delegations, several neighbours expressed concern about additional traffic, parking and noise resulting from the increased density, particularly the proposed fourplex.

The building lost legal-non-conforming status as a duplex when it was not used for that purpose for a period of time and owner Nathan Harper applied to legalize the two-unit use. However, he also asked for a zoning amendment to include the possibility of a fourplex in the future, which drew concerns from nearby residents.

At the March 15 meeting, Harper presented council with drawings of the proposed renovation and stated he would limit the project to a duplex.

Mayor George Bridge noted that prior to the meeting, council had received one letter in favour of the revised proposal.

Council passed an bylaw amending the zoning to allow a duplex, with a provision that “No more than a total of two residential dwelling units shall be permitted on the property.”
