Mayor advocates exclusion of council members for long-service benefit

While Puslinch Mayor Dennis Lever is all for recognizing long-serving staff and council members, he does not believe councillors should get additional financial awards for that service.

The purpose of a policy before councillors on July 20 involved the recognition of permanent full-time and part-time employees, volunteer firefighters, and council and committee members for continuous years of service to the township.

Casual employees would be excluded from the service recognition policy.

Lever stated, “while I would be very pleased to announce a council member or committee member had reached a certain (number of years), I do not think they should be eligible for any of the financial compensations included in the report.”

Councillor Ken Roth agreed.

“I think usually when we ‘retire,’ it is because we are not re-elected … so I don’t think anyone wants to give us money,” he quipped.

Councillors Matthew Bulmer and Susan Fielding agreed as well.

The policy was adopted as amended.
