Looking for homegrown … in a positive way

Councillors here might be taking a positive look at the phrase “homegrown” in the near future.

Pulled from correspondence for future discussion is correspondence from Homegrown Ontario, based in Elmira.

“You don’t have to read it too carefully to know why I’d like that to happen,” said Deputy-mayor Judy Dirksen.

Jennifer Haley, chairman of Homegrown Ontario’s steering committee, wrote to Minto looking for support.

She stated Homegrown Ontario is an alliance of various meat producer associations, and that the Homegrown brand would allow Ontario consumers to support its farmers by purchasing Ontario produced meat and poultry.

“Research from Canada’s leading survey-based marketing firm, Ipsos Reid, clearly indicates that Ontario consumers are eager to support Ontario farmers and the local economy by choosing meat and poultry products produced in Ontario.

“We gratefully acknowledge towns and city councils who are trying to encourage the purchase of locally produced food as it contributes to the creation of a sustainable environment. The Homegrown Ontario partners whole heartedly believe that the purchase of locally produced meat and poultry should be identified as a local sustainable procurement practice.”
