Local residents go above and beyond raising 1,000 lbs of food program

The local community continues to go above and beyond the call of duty for the East Wellington Community Services (EWCS) Food Bank, donating many pounds of needed food and hygiene products through different local area food drive events.

EWCS manager of client services Erika Westcott said two Sept. 8 events boasted a total donation of 1,000 pounds of food and just over $800 raised in support of the local food bank program.

ReMax Real Estate Centre in Erin held a “free barbecue for food donation”.

Residents came out to enjoy a free hot dog and drink in return for a donation of a non-perishable or monetary donation to the food bank.  The event raised 385 pounds of food and a total of $100 was collected, despite the rainy and cool weather conditions.

Meanwhile Dawn and Anthony Pulver hosted their 12th annual community golf tournament and selected the EWCS food bank as the recipient of this fundraiser.

Sixty eight golfers participated in the tournament, and the weather did not dampen the spirits of the golfers as they raised $644 plus collected a truckload of non-perishable food items, weighing a total of 615 pounds.

The EWCS Active Adults Line Dancers were also busy learning new dance moves and collecting supplies for the food bank. On Sept. 7, the group  presented EWCS with a food donation totalling $100.

Wescott said, “This is truly appreciated and will help EWCS to fill our food bank shelves, which were getting very close to empty during the summer months.”

She noted the community is fortunate to have such a supportive community, filled with individuals, groups and organizations that continue to go above and beyond when help is required to support our programs.

However, she added “We are always looking for volunteers – if you would like to volunteer in any of our stores, programs or host a special event for EWCS, contact our agency at 519-833-9696 or erika.w@ew-cs.com.”
