Local fire department receives grain extrication tool donation

The Centre Wellington Fire Department has received a donation of a “grain extrication tool” from Woodrill Ltd.

The company, which is located in Guelph and Marsville, with a grain receiving agent in Teviotdale, serves the farming community throughout central and southern Ontario.

The grain extrication tool can help in the rescue of someone trapped in a grain bin or other soft material.

Accepting this important rescue tool on July 19 from Peter Hannam and Jim Timmings of Woodrill, was Fire Chief Brad Patton.

This rescue device consists of four aluminum pieces which are slid down into the grain bin,  creating an octagonal tube around the victim. Firefighters are then able to remove the grain and relieve pressure from around the victim allowing them to breath and time to rescue the patient. The tool was manufactured by the Lambton County 4-H Safety Club.

The Centre Wellington Fire Department, which will respond to any farm accident when requested, took the opportunity to try to raise farm safety awareness.

Entering any confined space like a gain storage bin can be dangerous and life threatening. Entry should only be done with extreme caution and a safety plan.

Department officials would like to thank Woodrill for the donation, which will enable them to perform grain extrication in a much quicker and safe manner.
