Library and museum lectures on Thomson Beattie

Marking the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking, the Wellington County Library, Fergus Branch and Wellington County Museum and Archives present the life of Fergus native Thomson Beattie on April 12, 6:30pm at the Fergus Branch and April 14 at 2pm at the Museum and Archives.

Beattie had it all – family wealth, a successful business and the opportunity to travel at a time when few could afford a holiday. So fortunate was Beattie that he was able to sail home from a European vacation on that “great new unsinkable boat.”

By dawn on April 15, 1912, he had died of exposure after a night in a lifeboat, one of 1,500 victims to drown after the Titanic struck an iceberg. From that moment, his life story has been part of the Titanic’s voyage into history.

Everyone is invited to explore Beattie’s Scottish roots, his life in Winnipeg, and the events leading up to the Titanic sinking. Admission is free, but advance registration is required:

– Thursday, April 12 at 519-843-1180 in Fergus; and

– April 14 at 519-846-0916 extension 5221 at the museum.

The Fergus branch is located on 190 St. Andrew St. West in Fergus. The Wellington County Museum is on County Road 18 between Fergus and Elora.
