Earlier this year, I learned of the need for library books in schools in isolated communities in Nunavut and Northern Ontario. As a member of the Rotary Club of Clifford, I told my fellow Rotarians of this need, and we adopted this project as our 2017 Literacy Project.
To date, I have shipped over 600 pounds of books to 5 different schools and have another 600 pounds to be boxed and shipped.
I would like to thank the many individuals who donated books to this project, and the the Grand Valley Library, the Clifford-Minto Public School and the Ross R. MacKay Public School, who each filled my car to the brim with books.
I would also like to thank the people who generously gave financially to help with the shipping costs for these books. Most of these communities have no road access and shipping is done by air. When a case of water has a price tag of one hundred dollars at a local northern store, you can tell that shipping a box of books of similar weight is going to be an expensive proposition. I started off with money from the Rotary Club, held several fundraisers over the year, and with the help of your readers, we have been able to give these kids something to read through their long winters.
Thank you again to your readers.
