Last tower in Saturday for high speed internet

The final tower should be erected on Saturday as Wellington County completes its high speed internet project.

That was the message from Centre Wellington councillor Kirk McElwain on Monday as he reported to the township’s committee of the whole that the work is nearly completed.

The county received a grant of about $1 million from the province to find a company that would supply high speed internet in areas that did not have any access to that service. There were a number of false starts, including the first company involved going bankrupt.

But McElwain, who sat on the county committee, said the last outreach meeting for wireless service provider Xplorenet would be on Tuesday in Wellington North Township, and the final tower was expected to be done on the weekend.

“The project has been completed as planned,” he said.

Councillor Walt Visser wondered if that includes solving problems at Pine Meadows, a retirement community near Belwood. He wondered if people there are still having problems with the service.

McElwain said that should not be the case, but if there are, users should call the company.

“There are going to be some valleys,” he suggested.

Even with the project completed, there are challenges.

Erin Mayor Lou Maieron has noted several times there are areas in his community that are not served by Xplorenet. Yet he noted the service is for areas where it is not available. If other companies are providing it, Xplorenet would not have that area as a priority.

There have also been complaints about Puslinch service.
