It takes a village

Often the above phrase is associated with raising young people well. For our purposes this week, it is a hearty congratulations to Drayton 150 Celebration organizers, who managed to pull off an event that will long be remembered.

The cast of volunteers was dozens deep and the committee established to organize the whole event was less than a dozen. Names from the past and present teamed up months ago to properly honour the village straddling the Conestogo River.

As with most urban centres that existed prior to amalgamation, Drayton may have become part of the new Township of Mapleton, but locals and former residents still think of it as their hometown.

Villagers gathered for three days of festivities. Activities for all ages ran through the day and evenings, capped off with themed dinners and entertainment. It is fantastic when a plan comes together, and people can reminisce and look toward a bright future.

Other communities are busy readying themselves for their own events over the summer.

The Erin Fall Fair will be celebrating its 175th anniversary, starting with a Tractor and Vintage Farm Truck parade on July 5. The community will gather at the fairgrounds for social activities and a fiddle jam. The big finale happens Thanksgiving weekend.

It takes a village, as in many volunteers, to pull off these amazing events. Thank you.
