Homecoming group shares $100,000 with local organizations

Chair Bill Smith and the 150th Community Anniversary and 2017 Clifford Homecoming committee rated its success with the number of enthusiastic volunteers who participated and 14,600 people who attended the event Aug. 4 to 7.

At a wrap-up meeting on Nov. 10, the committee rewarded clubs and organizations that helped net a profit of $100,600.

At total of 31 groups and clubs shared in the proceeds. The distribution of profits included an honorarium to the Knox United Church for allowing the committee to meet in the Salem Room once a month for three years.

Other recipients were the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Community Church, library, firefighters, downtown revitalization, recreation association, Rotary, Lions, Merry Makers, Horticultural Society, Meals on Wheels, Food Bank, figure skating, trails and the truck show.

For their volunteer hours in assisting to make the homecoming a success,  donations were given to Drew Community Association, Harriston Legion Branch 296, Minto Arts Council, Normanby Community 4-H, Normanby Optimist Group, Queen’s Belles, Trinity Lutheran Church Youth Group, Belmore Community Choir, Neustadt Lions, Maitland Valley Historical Car Club, Mildmay Lions, Mildmay Rotary, Walkerton Rotary, Walkerton Knights of Columbus, and St. John’s Ambulance.

With a positive response to the movies that played in the arena during homecoming, one final bit of business is still outstanding. Organizers will copy the old movies and capture the highlights of the 2017 homecoming. Once compiled and copied onto computer memory sticks, the celebration will be offered for a nominal fee.
