Hold and secure at Erin schools result of nearby gunshot

ERIN – The reported discharge of a gun near Erin Public School triggered a hold and secure precaution at the school shortly after noon on Monday as police swarmed the area.

“Wellington OPP detained multiple people and the situation was defused,” said OPP spokesperson Josh Cunningham.

He added the investigation was continuing and charges may be laid.

Cunningham said there were no injuries or reports of property damage, and the incident is not related to the schools.

The hold and secure, which was extended to nearby Erin District High School, was lifted at 1:20pm.

The precaution means that classes continue, but students remain inside with the doors locked while police are active nearby.

“It was business as usual in the classrooms,” said Upper Grand District School Board spokesperson Heather Loney.

A 17-year-old boy from Erin was later charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, careless use of a firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm. He is to appear in Guelph court on Jan. 2.
