Highway 89 bridge tender accepted by council

Work is expected to start shortly on the investigation and repairs to the deck of a bridge on Highway 89 just east of Mount Forest.

At a recent works committee meeting, Public Works manager Gary Williams reported that following discussions with BM Ross engineers and the Ministry of Transportation, the municipality received tenders for investigation work, including temporary repairs to the bridge deck.

They are: $114,785 Owen King Ltd.; $104,2925, WG Kelly Construction Ltd.; and $91,392 Reeves Construction Ltd.

All tenders included HST.

The committee approved the tender from Reeves, pending BM Ross’s review of the submitted tenders.

Williamson noted the work will commence immediately and must be completed by Oct. 22.

He said one area of the decking will be done and it will depend on the findings whether the township needs to do the second area.

Williams said the township will apply to the MTO for that funding in 2011, which means it will likely need to carry over the cost of the tender until next year.

Mayor Mike Broomhead said everyone is aware of the sinkholes developing on the bridge east of Mount Forest.

He said there will be MTO funding for the work.

Williamson explained that any funding would be part of a 2011 funding application.

Broomhead said the net township commitment with engineering and additional costs come to $117,789.

If approved, MTO connecting link funds would cover 90 per cent of that amount.
