Heritage Days in Harriston planned for Aug. 24-25

Heritage Days will be celebrated here this summer.

On Feb. 19, Minto town council passed a motion declaring Aug. 24 and 25 Heritage Days, at the request of the Harriston Historical Society.

The event will involve numerous community groups and businesses and will be coordinated by the Minto Chamber of Commerce.

Heritage Days will celebrate both the 135th anniversary of the town of Harriston and the 100th anniversary of the local Ford dealership. A car show hosted by Leslie Motors will be part of the festivities.

While other events are still being confirmed, a preliminary list includes a pork barbecue hosted by the Harriston K-40 Club, a ‘Touch a Truck’ showcase hosted by Harriston Motors in conjunction with the local firefighters’ association, sidewalk sales,  music at Tannery Park, memorabilia displays and an essay competition.

A 50-year reunion of players from the 1963 OASA and WOAA Midget softball champions from Harriston and the 1964 Grand River Intermediate champions will be part of the event. Deputy mayor Terry Fisk noted that among the players on the 1963 Midget team were current Harriston residents Lloyd Tuck, Ron Smith and Don Gibson.
