Helping more at-home seniors stay healthy in Wellington

Ontario is helping more seniors in Wellington County maintain their health and be able to age in their own home, in their own  community, said Perth-Wellington MPP John Wilkinson on Nov. 12.

He highlighted the provincial Aging at Home strategy while attending a Seniors Sensational exercise class in Minto.

“Our government is reducing the time Ontarians spend in hospital by ensuring more services are available to seniors in their home community,” Wilkinson said.

“Seniors in both the Townships of Minto and Mapleton are receiving new, important, community-based services to ensure they have the quality of life they deserve at home.”

He said Aging At Home programs provide health care services to seniors in the comfort and dignity of their own homes and permits them to lead healthy and independent lives while avoiding unnecessary visits to hospitals, which can ultimately reduce emergency room waiting times.

He stated that this year, Ontario is providing $18,718,537 to fund Waterloo-Wellington Aging at Home programs.

Seniors in Wellington County will benefit from programs such as the Seniors Centre for Excellence.

It is run by Mapleton Township, and funded through the Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network, and offers exercise classes, community walking programs, a congregate dining program, and educational sessions to help seniors take an active role in managing and maintaining their health.

He said, the strategy is a part of the government’s plan to provide more access to health care services while improving quality and accountability for patients.

Ontario is increasing funding for the Aging at Home program by $143.4-million this year. It is important to note that Ontario’s senior population will double within 20 years.

The exercise classes have been a particular hit in the rural communities. Local participants praise the classes which helps them keep healthy and fit and continue to live independently in their own homes.
