GUTPELL, Thomas
It is with profound sadness that the family of Thomas (Tom) Alan Gutpell announce his peaceful passing at home on Wednesday June 17, 2026 after a courageous journey with Glioblastoma. He was in his 76th year. Left to cherish his memory are his children Brittany (David) and Matthew (Kristie), and his beloved grandson Adler. As an extended member of the Watson clan, also surviving are his sister and brother in laws Donna (Howard) Wheeler, Jim (Anne Marie) Watson, Barbara Kesselring, and David (Penny) Watson. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Marlene, his parents Leon (Elmer) and Margaret Gutpell, his aunt Marion Musselman, and his sister Mary Gutpell. As well as his father and mother in law Donald (Dave) and Ruth Watson, and his brother in law Glenn (and his wife Marilyn) Watson. Tom was born and raised in Kitchener. After marrying Marlene, together they moved to Ponsonby where they raised their family. Upon retirement they relocated to Rainy River in order to be closer to their children. In his younger years, Tom developed a passion for sports, music, and travelling that continued throughout his life. In his youth he played Junior C hockey, attended many concerts, and travelled around the world. As life progressed, Tom became an avid Junior A hockey fan, grew an extensive record collection, and continued his adventures and love of the great outdoors, but on a more local level. He always ensured he shared his passions with his family. This included coaching his children’s sports teams, taking them to Guelph Storm hockey games, as well as venturing on many camping trips to Algonquin Park. Along with his wife Marlene, Tom was an avid gardener and animal lover, especially of cats. Throughout their years together they took in a number of strays, making him a Cat Dad to many. Tom’s natural ability to socialize with anyone and everyone led to an extensive group of friends throughout his lifetime, and all who knew him well were very familiar with his impressive gift of carrying a conversation on a variety of topics. Tom always made it a priority to stay in touch with his friends, ensuring he kept everyone up to date on his life and the comings and goings of his children as they grew into adulthood. Tom’s pride and joy was his family and above all else, he loved visiting with his children and spending time with his grandson whom he lovingly referred to as “the paddler”. A private service will be held at a later date at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River where he will be laid to rest. As per Tom’s wishes, donations may be made to Best for Kitty located in Fort Frances, or Brain Cancer Canada.
