A Guelph police officer has been charged with assault in connection with an incident last summer.

On Sept. 19 Guelph Police officers were involved with a member of the public who was taken into police custody.

“It is alleged an officer assaulted this citizen while in police custody,” Guelph Police stated in a Dec. 30 press release. “An internal investigation was launched and for transparency purposes, an external police service was assigned to conduct a criminal investigation.”

On Dec. 30, as a result of the investigation, Constable Corey McArthur was arrested and charged with assault causing bodily harm. He was released and is expected back in court on Feb. 10.

At the start of the internal investigation, McArthur, a 15 -year veteran of the Guelph Police, was re-assigned to administrative duties.

Guelph Police stated no further information will be released and stressed the service is “committed to maintaining the trust and confidence of the community in performing our duties and our accountability to the public.”
