Guelph Humane Society seeks community support in search of new home

The Guelph Humane Society is renewing its efforts to find a new home.

The 500 Wellington Street West, has been the GHS shelter’s home for more than 40 years and is on city-owned land shared with Guelph’s wastewater treatment plant. Wastewater infrastructure is scheduled to expand in the near future to address Guelph’s growing population, which includes reclaiming the shelter’s current building.

In summer 2015 the GHS purchased a property with plans to renovate for a new shelter. After significant work by the construction planning team on the renovation, building constraints and challenges were encountered, leading to the conclusion that the site was would not work for the GHS.

“The GHS continues to actively investigate new properties on the market, as well as some that are not currently listed for sale,” said Lisa Veit, acting executive director of the GHS in a press release.

An ideal site for the future shelter would:

– improve the visibility of the shelter;

– be close to public transit;

– have proximity to green space for dog walking;

– be within the city limits;

– accommodate existing operations;

– allow modernization and innovation of animal care needs; and

– permit future expansions to programming.

“We invite you, our supporters, friends, and our community, to dream with us and to contribute whatever you can in our mission to innovate animal care for another century,” said Shane Bateman, board of directors chair in a press release. Anyone with suggestions or who can contribute can visit the society’s website at www.guelphhumane.ca or email GHSnewhome@guelphhumane.ca.
