Guelph Humane Society had successful move on weekend

Launching 50/50 draw to meet fundraising goal

GUELPH – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) raised $14,298 over the March 5 to 7 weekend thanks to support from B.A.P. Heating and Cooling Services, which matched donations made over the weekend.

The organization is still $1.15 million shy of its $10 million goal, and is launching its first-ever 50/50 draw on March 15 with a guaranteed minimum prize of $5,000. The draw will run March 15 to April 15, and tickets will be available at www.GHSLotto.ca.

GHS moved into its new building at 190 Hanlon Creek Blvd. on the weekend and welcomed the first animals on March 8.

Adrienne McBride, executive director of GHS, said the new facility is so much than just a typical animal shelter.

“From our research, we believe we will be the only humane society in the province that has a dedicated space for farm animals right in the building,” she said in a press release.

Dog quarantine area

“We have also added a dog quarantine area that will allow us to bring in dogs from Northern Ontario, for example. It is really important that our community continues to support this new building, so that we can continue expanding our services.”

With the expanded space, GHS is also hoping to expand programs like Pets in Transition (PIT), which helps victims of domestic violence who are too worried about their pets to leave their abuser.

PIT offers extended, confidential foster care for pets so individuals can transition to violence-free, healthy lives.

The PIT program also offers foster care for the pets of clients of the Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo Wellington who are hospitalized for mental health or addiction.
