GUELPH – Women will be the centre of attention later this month as the Guelph Concert Band prepares a family-friendly afternoon of music.
The 70-member band will focus on female composers during the show at Harcourt Memorial United Church on May 25 starting at 3 p.m. in a show the band promises will be “interesting and exciting.”
Titled Echoes of Change – Women in Winds, the concert will include works from composers Erin Lilliefors, Erika Svanoe, Louie Madrid Calleja, Astor Piazzolla, Cait Nishimura, Julie Giroux, Kirsten Hirlinger and more.
Players in the band will be highlighted with major solos throughout the show, and the band’s flute and woodwind sections in particular are sure to mesmerize the crowd. Proceeds of the show will go to Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis.
Originally founded in 1878 as the Guelph City Band, the organization was renamed the Guelph Concert Band in 1968. It is conducted by Lauren Helmer, a music educator from Kitchener.
General admission tickets are $22.63, or $17.31 for youth over 12, seniors and students. Children under 12 are free. TIckets can be purchased at www.guelphconcertband.ca.
