The 100th anniversary of the First World War will be marked in a powerful multi-media tribute to the Canadians who were there.
Historian Hugh Brewster presents a dramatic depiction of the events of 1914 to 1918 with actors, singers and choral music to be complemented by a screen show of remastered archival footage and still images.
Canadian actors, Christopher Newton and Brigitte Robinson of the Shaw Festival bring to life names now etched on monuments at Ypres, Vimy, Passchendaele, and Mons, evoking the experiences of the men and women of the Great War through excerpts from their diaries and letters.
The Elora Festival Singers under the baton of Noel Edison recreate the music of the period – from Tipperary and Roses of Picardy to forgotten Canadian songs like Canada, Fall In and The Dumbell Rag to choral tributes by Benjamin Britten, Vaughan Williams and Healey Willan.
The tribute will take place on July 19 at St. John’s Church in Elora at 1:30 and 3:30pm.
Pre-concert talks by historian Terry Copp will be held at 1:15 and 3:15pm.
