Grandmothers group hosts International Women”™s Day celebration at Elora Legion

The Grandmothers of the Grand (GOTG) hosted a fundraiser for the Stephen Lewis Foundation at the Elora Legion in celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8.

“It’s a celebration of the women of the community,” said GOTG chair Elly Tuitman of the event, which  featured food samples from local restaurants, an indoor marketplace, musical entertainment by Nonie Crete and a presentation on the foundation by GOTG member Sharon Ogden.

The GOTG is the local arm of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign launched by the Stephen Lewis Foundation in March 2006.

The campaign aims to raise awareness, build solidarity and mobilize funds for Africa’s grandmothers and the orphans in their care.

It has since evolved into a national movement of more than 240 Grandmother groups, including over 5,000 women, who support African grandmothers through the foundation.

The local group meets monthly in Elora to plan ways to help African grandmothers, who support children orphaned by HIV/AIDS through the foundation.

Members do not have to be a grandmother to join. For information on the group call Tuitman at 519 843-1528.
