Foodgrains bank planting a family affair

Three generations of a local farming family were at work planting crops for the local chapter of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank on May 17.

Lorne Underwood picked up his grandson Jackson Underwood, 5, and took him to meet with his dad Jeremy Underwood.

Jackson waited patiently while his dad set up the farm machinery. Once ready, Jeremy climbed into the cab of the International harvester tractor and Jackson climbed aboard to take his place beside his father.

They covered every inch of land rolling the freshly seeded field leaving a bit of a dust trail behind them.

Planting this crop involves a number of people. The land located between Jamesway Manor and the farm of Siegfried and Christa Ziemann is donated by Vance Dettman. Half the seed is donated by Pioneer Seeds through Boyd’s Farm Supply.

The seeds were planted by Reval Dettman, the land was rolled by Jeremy Underwood, and the spraying will be done by North Wellington Co-op.

With the warm spring rains and summer sun, this crop of soybeans will grow under the watchful eyes of the seniors residing at Jamesway until the day it is harvested in the fall.

Once harvested, the soybeans will go to market. The soybeans will be sold and the income will be matched by the Canadian government four to one to help support communities in third world countries.
