BRESLAU – Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre (WWFC) is holding its third annual golf tournament at Rebel Creek Golf Club on Sept. 20 to raise funds for student pilots.
Training to be a pilot is costly and many aviation students are not eligible for OSAP or other financial support.
The tournament has become popular as a way to support students and give back to the community, bringing in donations and sponsors from the industry and community.
“One of the biggest stumbling blocks with training is the cost,” says Bob Connors, WWFC general manager.
“We want to help, so WWFC has established a student pilot scholarship fund to help students achieve their aviation goals.”
This year’s tournament will present a new feature – a video, profiling five LIFT recipients, including a behind-the-scenes look at how the scholarship helped these students complete their training and pursue their ambitions. Proceeds from the event are matched by WWFC to facilitate the LIFT Scholarship.
Highlights of the event include a 50/50 helicopter ball drop (donated by Great Lakes Helicopter), hole-in-one, closest to the pin and putting contest.
A silent auction with more than 85 items will also be featured.
In 2017, WWFC established the golf tournament for student pilot scholarships, which raised $8,000 and awarded two $4,000 scholarships.
In 2018, $16,000 was raised and four $4,000 scholarships were awarded.
Originally established as a flying club, WWFC continued to grow over the years to become a driving force behind the development of the Waterloo Airport in its current location.
WWFC offers a state-of-the-art facility that is partnered with Conestoga College and the University of Waterloo aviation programs.
