Fire issues already covered under Building Code

A move to have the local fire department more involved in building permit reviews appears to be a non-issue.

On June 15, councillor Jerry Schmidt presented a motion that would have seen the local department take a more active role when building permits are issued. But it seems that involvement is already covered in the Ontario Building Code.

In a written report to council, Chief Administrative Officer Brenda Law said the township department reviews site plans, subdivision plans, some commercial and industrial permits, but not residential.

“From speaking to our interim Chief Building Official, the fire requirements are covered under the Building Code and therefore handled by the Chief Building Official,” she said. Because of that, it is not a requirement for the fire department to review permits.

“However, we do involve them in certain aspects, such as emergency access on site plans, fire tanks, etc.”

Schmidt did not proceed with the motion.
