The Wellington North Fire Service responded to a fire in the attic of a home early on Canada Day.

When firefighters arrived at the home on Grey Road 109 in Southgate Township smoke was visible from the north side roof top of the residence.

Wellington North firefighters quickly knocked down the fire and damage was minimized.

One firefighter suffered a knee injury, was taken to the hospital and was later released.

The neighboring West Grey Fire Service attended and assisted crews with fire duties.

Guelph-Wellington paramedics were also on scene and rendered aid to the firefighter who was injured.

The homeowner was credited for having working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

“If the alarms were not present, it may have been a different story,” said Fire Chief Dave Guilbault.

The cause and damage costs of the fire are still under investigation.
