Fergus nurse taking part in mission trip

Local nurse Dorothy McEachern will be leaving May 8 for a three-week mission trip to Kunming, China.

The Fergus resident will be one of 65 people taking part in the trip, which is being organized by Education, Medical Aid and Service (EMAS) Canada, a Christian charitable organization.

McEachern, a part-time registered practical nurse in the operating room at Groves Memorial Hospital, is the only resident in the Wellington County area going on the mission trip.

She is part of a surgical team that will address mainly plastic surgery cases, with some general surgery. The most common procedure performed will be cleft lip and palate repairs and release of scar contractures secondary to burns with skin grafting.

In addition to nurses and doctors, the team consists of anesthetists,  physical therapists, pharmacists and various other helpers. Team members are also responsible for carrying medical supplies to China.

The cost of the trip is about $3,000. It’s not too late to donate to McEachern’s trip or to any other EMAS project; visit www.emascanada.org or leave a donation directly at Groves in the operating room office with Donna Thompson.

Any funds raised over and above McEachern’s costs will remain with EMAS for up to two years towards future missions in which she may take part.
