Federal grant aids city truck maker

Hitachi Construction Truck Manufacturing Ltd. will expand its plant here, increase production capacity and create 244 new jobs.

The announcement was made by Minister of State Gary Goodyear who also announced a federal grant to make that expansion possible.

The government is giving up to $6,647,000 to help Hitachi expand, buy new equipment and open a product and advanced manufacturing testing centre in Guelph. The company makes off-road hauling trucks primarily used in the mining industry. The expansion project will result in increased production, changes to the existing models to improve operating costs and reduced emissions.

The benefits of the project will extend to other businesses in the region, because Hitachi buys many of its components from southern Ontario companies. The contribution is expected to create 244 additional jobs at Hitachi by the time the project is completed, as well as strengthen Ontario’s manufacturing sector.
