The Wellington County Museum (WCM) is hosting a special Family Day celebration: Sugar and Gold, the Story of the Underground Railway in Canada.
Presented by Chris Whitely and Diana Braithwaite, the event tells the story of the free and formerly-enslaved settlers who followed the Underground Railway to Canada. The stories are told through songs, spoken word and pictures.
Braithwaite’s ancestors came to Canada through the Underground Railway and settled in the hamlet of Glen Allen, part of what was known as the Queen’s Bush.
In 2008 an Ontario Heritage Trust provincial plaque was unveiled to commemorate the settlement and the 1,500-plus black settlers who lived there for over 30 years, beginning in about 1820.
The museum will be open on Family Day, Feb. 20 from 1 to 4:30pm. The Sugar and Gold presentation will begin at 2pm in the Exhibit Hall. Admission is $2 per person.
The museum is located on County Road 18, between Fergus and Elora. For more information visit wcm.on.ca or call 519-846-0916.
