Erins McMillan Park needs work to revive grass

McMillan Park is in need of help.

In a recent report to council, town manager Lisa Hass stated the grass in the park “is in sad shape and is mainly weeds.”

Part of the reason is there is a lot of foot traffic there.

Hass said “It doesn’t look nice.”

She added parks and recreation manager Graham Smith recommended the site be top dressed and re-seeded, but wanted council’s view first.

There is a water connection at the park, so grass could be watered as needed.

“The gardens themselves are beautiful; it is just the grass that is terrible.”

Councillor Josie Wintersinger said, “I was happy to see the garden was being taken care of because it is a volunteer system.”

Wintersinger would like to see something done, but stressed that grass must be watered regularly, “because it is getting late in the season for seeding grass.”

Hass said it was a similar situation when the park was created.

“The sod that was laid down didn’t get enough water. But there is a lot of activity there as well,” Hass added.

She said if the park is to be reseeded, it needs to be done right away.

Councillor Barb Tocher added that last fall council requested a weed and feed in the Hillsburgh historical park.

“It needs it again.”

Hass said that was in the budget.

Tocher said the gardens in that park are getting out of control.

She said that the members of the Hillsburgh garden club are aging and don’t have the same number of volunteers.

She asked if the town could get a price to possibly redo them.

Councillor John Brennan asked if anyone was ever assigned the duty of watering the grass at McMillan Park.

He said if the effort is made to reseed the park, something formal should be in place to ensure the grass is watered regularly.

Tocher suggested perhaps the grass could be fenced off temporarily to give the seed a chance to take root.
