Erin council briefs

Further budget meetings, the town logo and a new employee were some of the items discussed at the Erin council meeting on April 7.

Budget meeting

Councillor Matt Sammut said he thought it was necessary to have another budget meeting with all of the department heads present to go through the budget one last time before it’s passed by council.

Councillor John Brennan said he didn’t think this was necessary because ultimately the change for the ratepayer would be minuscule.

Councillor Jeff Duncan said he was comfortable with the budget the way it is.

Sammut stayed firm in his statement that council needs to start looking at bigger items and making hard decisions.

In the end, no one on council seconded Sammut’s motion, so it didn’t go any further than the discussion.

There will be a public meeting to present the budget on April 21 at 6:30pm before the regularly scheduled council meeting.

Town logo

Economic development coordinator Bob Cheetham suggested to council the logo used on the town’s new website, with one shamrock, be adopted as the Town of Erin’s official logo for marketing purposes.

Councillor Sammut asked if Cheetham had considered using a tagline.

Cheetham said that taglines tend to hold on and if they are not perfect they are not useful.

“I would suggest put a tagline … you can change depending on the circumstances you want to use them for,” Cheetham explained. “In the past I’ve used a separate one for business attraction, a different one for tourism, you apply it to what you need.”

Council supported the official logo.

Building/planning assistant

Jessica Wilton was hired as the building and planning assistant at grade five step one for one year.
