Emergency responders assist tuber with exit from Elora Gorge

ELORA – Emergency responders from Centre Wellington Fire Rescue safely assisted an individual in exiting the Elora Gorge after she fell from a tube while floating on the Grand River on July 31.

Firefighters were called around 5pm to assist a person “trapped in the gorge.”

“A group of friends were tubing and the one girl lost her tube so she became separated from it,” explained deputy fire chief Jonathan Karn.

“She just wasn’t sure where she was in the river so she called 911.”

Karn added, “We just went upriver, found her and were able to walk her back to the exit point. There was no injuries.”

Karn said the tubers were from Niagara Falls and “weren’t 100 per cent familiar with the area.”

“It ended up no injuries and a fairly quick call once we found her,” he noted.

Karn said the tuber was on the shore when she called 911 and “wasn’t familiar with how far away the exit point was.

“And the river does get deeper in spots where you have to swim. So, with not having the tube, I just don’t think she was comfortable navigating her way to the exit.”
